Ghosts of a South Asian Past

Collage, Chennai
Chennai Photo Biennale

A series of digital artworks reinterpreting faces from a lost South Asian past. The series was inspired by pre colonial era photographs of women across India and Sri Lanka. Using CGI characters, the artworks try to imagine what these women would look like in the future.

The characters represent a link between the past and the future – the traditional and the modern. We take traditional elements from our culture, like kolams or Tamil scriptures – but present them in an alternative and almost taboo way. As tattoos on their skin, or even metallic piercings that emerge from their bodies.

The artworks were presented as an exhibition at Collage – a luxury boutique in Chennai, India. The artworks were shown on massive LED screens, and the audience were surrounded by a gallery of moving digital portraits.
